5th Grade Math -
This week we continue adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. and multiplying whole numbers by fractions, which is actually a lot like dividing; 21 x 1/3 = 7 because if you divide 21 into 3 equal parts 1/3 of 21 = 7.
Alder East Reading -
This week we plan to begin a new in-class novel study on Dan Gutman's, The Kid Who Ran for President. Students will be divided into small Lit Circle reading groups where they will practice and learn the different tasks and roles of the Lit Circle; weekly Response Journaling, Wordsmith, Researcher, Story Connector, Illustrator and Discussion Leader. Once the students are familiar with each of the jobs, they will use them to conduct independent novel studies throughout the year.
At Home: Students should still be doing independent reading at home - a chapter book, graphic novel, biography, or non-fiction that isn't too focused on pictures and graphic information. This year, students will track all the books they read and use that info to evaluate their reading, and set reading goals.
A shortened Reading Log will be sent home Monday, and is due this Friday 12/2.
Alder East Writing -
This week, we will begin collecting ideas and personal stories for writing Personal Narratives between now and the Holiday Break, and then later to use as inspiration and building blocks Narrative Fiction stories.
