Social Studies -
We finished Chapter 3 with a paragraph short write which answered our essential question: How did the development of agriculture change daily life in the Neolithic Age (The New Stone Age). Students compared and contrasted The Old Stone Age (Paleolithic) and New Stone Age (Neolithic) for how people got food, what kind of shelters they lived in, and what kind of jobs and skills they developed.
This week we start Chapter 4 - The Rise of the Sumerian City-States. The Sumerian City States were some of the first major cities in human history. We're going to learn about how and why people built cities and lived together in large numbers, and why they chose to build cities in this area.

This week students are continuing our study of the Human Microbiome. We are learning that the human body is home to more than 100 trillion microorganisms, mostly bacteria, and that most of the bacteria in our bodies is beneficial. The focus of Chapter 2 is gathering evidence to support to show that fecal transplants can help cure patients infected with harmful bacteria. Today, we looked at a case study for Patient 23. In the study, Patient 23 reported feeling well during week 1, and feeling nauseous and sick during week 3. We examined samples of Patient 23's gut bacteria, and noticed that it was mostly the same at the time of both samples, however there was one form of bacteria present at week 3, that was not detected during week 1. We can speculate that the new bacteria was likely responsible for the patient's illness.
