Kalahari Field Trip Permission Forms - Due by Thursday, May 31st
* Permission forms were sent home last week for our year-end field trip to the Kalahari Water Park in Wisconsin Dells on Friday June 8th from 8:15-2:30. The cost is $25 - includes transportation, park admission, towels, and a pizza lunch. If you are in need of financial assistance, a minimum partial payment of $10.00 can be made and work scholarships may be requested for the remaining alance.
Writing -
This week students will completing our End-of-Year Writing Assessment. Monday and Tuesday students will be reading, viewing and discussing the topic, and Wednesday will be a writing period. Students will complete the writing assessment during the 60 minute class period on Wednesday.
This quarter, students have been reading, writing and discussing texts that are related to contemporary social issues in our communities. This week, we will be viewing and reading texts about the effectiveness of anti-smoking campaigns and thinking about their effect on our community. After reading, viewing and discussing students will write an argument about whether or not anti-smoking campaigns positively affect our community using reasons and evidence from the texts to support their argument.
Reading Groups - We'll be ending the year by doing book reports about our final books. Students will have some options for different ways that they can create their final book projects. Final Book reports are due Friday, May 25th.
Independent Reading - Reading Log - Due Monday, May 21.
Students are expected to complete at least 150 minutes of Independent Reading each week with parent/guardian signatures for their reading times. Reading Logs are a tool to encourage students to grow as independent readers. Many studies show that independent reading is a key skill linked to academic success. Please encourage students to read weekly outside of school whether it be novels, informational books, graphic novels, magazines, blogs, or fan fiction.
Social Studies -
Last week, we compared the daily life of Athens & Sparta in ancient Greece. This week we studying the factors that influenced the outcome of wars between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states.
