5th Grade Writing -
Students are finishing their Persuasive Essays. The goal of this essay is take a position on an issue and to use facts, and cite sources of evidence when supporting their reasons. Examples include: Should uniforms be required at school? Should cell phones be banned at school? Are video games harmful?
Students brainstormed, and exchanged ideas for good arguments on either side of the issue, and then did research to find strong facts to support their arguments.
5th Grade Math -
Students have begun our final unit on Fractions & Decimals. Last week we worked on finding lowest common denominators in order to add and subtract fractions. This week we will be examining decimals using tenths and hundredths.
Alder East Theme & Reading -
We've been studying the Golden Age of Athens. First we looked at the differences between Athens and Sparta. We've discussed Greek Philosophers and wrestled with ethical dilemmas. We've examined Greek architecture, sculpture and pottery. On Thursday, we read about Greek theater and selected Greek myths - Gods or Heros - and are creating skits to tell the myths.
