5th Grade Writing -
This week everyone worked to put the finishing touches on their informational books, final edits, writing or typing drafts, creating a graphic, selecting cover images.
Alder East Reading - We have been working on reading strategies using an informational, non-fiction book about Ancient Egypt, but Friday we did something a little more fun: using poems written about different occupations of ordinary people from the book "Voices of Ancient Egypt" by Kay Winters, students worked with a partner to perform a Readers Theater where they shared reading the text while also "performing" the role of occupations like carpenters, weavers, heardsmen, monument builders, or fishermen.
Alder East Theme - The students worked this week with their Nome groups to create Egyptian ceremonial masks translate Egyptian myths into temple paintings and hieroglyphs, and compose hymns to Egyptian deities. I think we all came away with an appreciation of the complexity involved in translating and writing in a pictographic language.
Enjoy the break!
