Writing:
The 5th graders have been working on The steps of our Writers Workshop. We have been reverse engineering our planning and pre-writing steps using last week's "Something I did this Summer for the First Time" draft. We found that using the planning and pre-writing steps revealed key details that we left out from our original story. Yesterday, we did some peer editing and got feedback from a partner. Today, students started final drafts using all the feedback.
Some 5th Graders writers need to finish over the weekend. Check that homework planner.
Math:
5th graders have been learning about polygons this week by ways to sort polygons, and non-polygons using size, shapes, and number of sides, exploring regular vs. irregular, congruent vs. similar, and lines of symmetry. This work has been hands-on, collaborative and has been a great avenue for class discussion. We've been tracking definitions and reflections in our math journals.
Most 5th graders might have a practice worksheet that needs to be finished over the weekend if they didn't finish in class. Check those homework planners.
Alders East Theme:
We're working on a huge mapping project. After studying the advantages, and shortfalls of various world maps, students are recreating a 1:2 scale version of their maps. We'll use this all year long to as we study civilizations of the ancient world. This involves measuring, grid plotting, team work and research. It's an awesome project to watch taking shape.
See you all on Monday!
