5th graders completed the unit assessment for Adding and Subtracting Fractions last week. We are wrapping up the final lessons which give students an introduction to working with Lowest Common Denominators, and Greatest Common Factors. Our next unit covers Point Value and Decimals.
Alder East Reading -
We will be doing DRA Progress Monitoring this month to observe student rate, fluency and comprehension at various reading levels.
Students should be reading daily at home.
With all the cancellations, and late starts before and since the break we weren't really able to properly finish The Kid Who Ran for President. Students who didn't finish some of the Literacy Circle jobs before the break will be finishing those this week to get caught up.
At Home: Students should still be doing independent reading at home - a chapter book, graphic novel, biography, or non-fiction that isn't too focused on pictures and graphic information. This year, students will track all the books they read and use that info to evaluate their reading, and set reading goals.
Alder East Writing -
This week students will be drafting, revising and writing final draft Personal Narratives. This week we worked on beginnings and endings, and Monday we'll be using some revision strategies before finishing final drafts. Students have drafted their stories from initial sketches and outlines of events, practiced writing story beginnings with action, dialogue or setting details, and will do peer and self editing before finishing final drafts.
Alder East Humanities -
We are beginning an Introduction to Ancient Civilizations of the Western Hemisphere - Mayas, Incas & Aztecs this week. Students who haven't finished their state flipbooks will have to finish during lunch study halls this week, or take their books home. They need to finished by Friday in order for grading. The flipbooks include a map of the state, the state flag, Interesting Facts and History, Population, Motto, Seal, State Nickname & Abbreviation, State Bird, Tree, Mammal, Fish, Flower, Resources and Industry, Colleges, Attraction, & Major League sports teams.
