I hope you all have enjoyed the extra time with your families.
5th Grade Math -
5th graders are almost finished with our Fractions unit. We are reviewing the various strategies we have learned for Adding and Subtracting Fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers, and preparing to finish this unit and take the final assessment next week.
Alder East Reading -
We will be doing DRA Progress Monitoring this month to observe student rate, fluency and comprehension at various reading levels.
Students should be reading daily at home.
With all the cancellations, and late starts before and since the break we weren't really able to properly finish The Kid Who Ran for President. Students who didn't finish some of the Literacy Circle jobs before the break will be finishing those this week to get caught up.
At Home: Students should still be doing independent reading at home - a chapter book, graphic novel, biography, or non-fiction that isn't too focused on pictures and graphic information. This year, students will track all the books they read and use that info to evaluate their reading, and set reading goals.
Alder East Writing -
This week students will be drafting, revising and writing final draft Personal Narratives. We have been collecting memories about special people, special places, weather stories, personal challenges, times things didn't go how we expected, or personal discoveries and surprises. Students have selected the story they want to write, created sketches and outlines of events, practiced adding details and telling their stories to class mates. This week we'll work on beginnings and endings, and revisions.
Alder East Humanities -
Alders are continuing work on their Flipbooks for one of the 50 states. The flipbooks include a map of the state, the state flag, Interesting Facts and History, Population, Motto, Seal, State Nickname & Abbreviation, State Bird, Tree, Mammal, Fish, Flower, Resources and Industry, Colleges, Attraction, & Major League sports teams.
We hope to finish their State Flipbooks this week and begin a short Introduction to Ancient Civilizations of the Western Hemishphere - Mayas, Incas & Aztects.
