Writing -
Narratives - Super Hero Stories - This week we transitioned from prewriting and planning to using writing strategies to improve our writing. We worked on Theme - what message do we want our story to have, writing Hooks - introductions that use dialogue, action or a character's thinking, and Show Not Tell - using dialogue and descriptive language to create pictures in the reader's mind, and bring life to people, places and things in our stories.
Reading -
This week we focused on Theme - what does the Author believe, and what is the message of the text. We read a story about the Greek goddess Athena, The Wise Goddess. Our focus questions were: What makes a good leader? How the does the author define heroism?
As we read the text as a class, and re-read the text with partners we focused on finding passages where we read about examples of Athena's leadership and heroism, and where the author shows us what she believes makes a good leader.
Independent Reading:
Reading Log - due Mondays. Students are required to complete at least 2.5 hours of Independent Reading each week with parent & teacher signatures for their reading times. Logs are due each Monday. Since we are studying fiction, Independent Reading books should be novels, stories or biographies (including graphic novels) - books that tell a story, have plot, and develop characters, so that we can practice the skills we are developing in class.
Listening to E-books on Overdrive can also count towards Independent Reading for reading logs. Students with a Madison Public Library card can also link their Library Card to Overdrive for access for even more books.
Students must have a book/E-book for class each day, either from home or from the library.
Social Studies -
This week we began Chapter 4 - The Rise of Sumerian City States. We are learning about why early people from northern Mesopotamia who had lived in the Zagros Mountain foothills for generations began to move south to build cities in the river plains between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in southern Mesopotamia. We will be learning how these farming villages grew into some of the the world's first major cities, and why this region is sometimes called the Cradle of Civilization.
