Dear Families,
To celebrate the end of Quarter 1, and to build community across the entire 6th grade students and staff will be walking to Fast Forward roller skating center on Friday, November 8th for a community-building field trip. We will leave at 11:30am and return by 2:00pm.
The cost of the trip is $10.00. This cost includes the rental of a pair of rollerskates and the facility. I will be sending home the permission slips on Monday. This is our last field trip for awhile.
Science -
We have begun Unit 2 - Metabolism. Students will learn that cells need glucose and oxygen molecules from food and air in order for the body to function. Students will learn through evidence and explanation that that low levels of glucose in the cells likely indicate that the digestive system is not breaking down starch into glucose to go into the cells. Finally we will examine how glucose and oxygen molecules undergo a chemical reaction within the cell, called cellular respiration, that releases energy.
Social Studies -
We're finishing Chapter 5 - Ancient Sumer, where students learned about the characteristics of Civilization. Our final project is a poster examining the 7 characteristics of civilization applied to our modern civilization. Next we begin our Egypt unit by looking at the geography of Egypt and it's southern neighbor, Kush, one of the first African kingdoms.
