Our Trip to Midvale Elementary on Friday was a big success! Hopefully we can do something similar later in the spring. I am including photos below of students from Mr. Towe's advisory class reading with their younger buddies..
Writing -
Argumentative Writing - Quarter 3 is about changing minds. In this unit, you will collect, analyze, and cite specific evidence to formulate questions, construct arguments, make decisions, and have the opportunity to change thinking. In class, we will investigate topics through close reading (e.g., text annotation, text dependent questions and rereading) and collaborative discussions.
After these investigations, we will write argumentative pieces, taking a position and supporting with textual evidence from credible sources.
Finally, you will use your argumentative writing as the basis to create an oral presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Photostory, Movie Maker) that is shared with your class mates.
Reading -
Tuesday and Wednesday we will be completing a mid-year Reading Inventory.
Reading Log - Due Monday, Jan. 22nd.
We'll also be spending some time working with our Reading Groups and completing at least one Literacy Circle task.
Independent Reading:
Reading Log - due Mondays. Students are required to complete at least 150 minutes of Independent Reading each week with parent & teacher signatures for their reading times. Logs are due each Monday. Since we are studying fiction, Independent Reading books should be novels, stories or biographies (including graphic novels) - books that tell a story, have plot, and develop characters, so that we can practice the skills we are developing in class.
Listening to E-books on Overdrive can also count towards Independent Reading for reading logs. Students with a Madison Public Library card can also link their Library Card to Overdrive for access for even more books.
Students should have a book/E-book for class each day, either from home or from the library.
Social Studies -
This week we'll continue learning about
the Social Structure and religious beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians. We'll be working in groups. Groups will study one social class from ancient Egypt and create and present short skits with facts about how their status affected their daily lives.
