6th Graders had a good first week back from holiday break.
Looks like there will be snow this week. Students go outside fore recess every day, so make sure your student is dressed for the cold.
Social Studies -
Back before break we were learning about social classes in Ancient Egypt. One of the most important classes was the priests and priestesses. One of their most important functions was to perform burial rituals, and prepare bodies for mummification. Students learned the many steps required to prepare a body, and made posters explaining the order and sequence of the steps. We also to apples, and covered them in a special salt called Natron. After returning from break, we observed that the apples have lost a significant amount of weight, they have changed color, and are getting very wrinkled. We will continue to monitor the changes. This week we also learned more about the Egyptian's religion and beliefs. Students studied the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses and created social media profiles for one. This week we will study the lower common classes like scribes, artisans, and peasants,
Science -
We have started our hands-on Microscope unit. This unit builds on and reinforces students’ understanding of organisms and the scale of living things. In this unit, students identify characteristics of living things, make multiple observations of different materials and items, and then use the 7 characteristics of life to make a scientific argument to prove what makes something living or nonliving.
